Ones culture drastically affects how they view the issues we
discussed in class. My issue is about funding for the US Alpine Snowboard Team.
Like any sport, there will be those who care and those who don’t. Someone
living in Florida most likely never gives a thought about the USSA or skiing in
general. Personally, this issue affects me because I am striving to compete on
the world cup level, and would like to see recognition from the USSA. I would
like to see the top US athletes competing at the highest level regardless of
their financial situation. If you compare this issue to any other sport,
college athletes are given scholarships so they can compete at the highest
level even if they cannot afford it.
Pelias and Shaffer helped influence the new perspective in a
few ways. They stated, “personal narratives asks you to see your own stories as
aesthetic texts to be skillfully crafted for the purpose of informing.” (55)
This made me realize that when the USSA is having a board meeting, it very
business-like and informative. They view snowboarding as a business and the
financial aspect, so they have their reasons to support half-pipe, slope-style,
and boardercross riders. They know that television and sponsors mostly focus on
freestyle snowboarding, so if they invest the money in those disciplines they
will see a quicker, greater return than if they invested money into the US
alpine riders.
